my 40 coupe had no motor when I bought it, I had found a running 53 8cyl engine to replace it but when we went to install it the firewall clearance is almost zero and the front mount seems out of place. Is there a difference in the frame or in the firewall that allows the 8cyl to fit in a 2827 but not my 2627? I don't want to start cutting into the car for this so looking for a better solution. thanks _________________ |

I have checked the 1940 Parts Manual and find two different part numbers for the 26 and 28 frame. However, check the Shop Manual illustration below and it shows (as I always suspected) that the 26 and 28 frames are the same. Perhaps something as simple as motor mount holes made two different frame part numbers, but all other measurements were the same.
That's as expected as all the 26s and 28s were Buick and Oldsmobile bodies (as opposed to the 25 being Chevrolet and the 29 being Cadillac).
Perhaps the motor mounting has probably changed over the years between 1940 and 1953. But with nothing to compare to that's sort of hard to pin point.
Oddly, on eBay front and rear motor mounts all seem to show 1940-1954 as the same.
Do the rear mountings on the engine/mounts align with the frame? I can understand firewall clearance being slim. Perhaps the mounting plate on the front of the engine changed. _________________ PontiacRegistry.com... building the single largest source of Pontiac information, services, and entertainment in the world! |

I found a 6 cyl engine but it could be a 35-36 block, is there a list of casting numbers for 35-41 6cyl engines? Thanks! _________________ |

If you could post some photos of the frame and later engine, that might help us visualize what is going on. _________________ PontiacRegistry.com... building the single largest source of Pontiac information, services, and entertainment in the world! |

trying to load some photos of the engine in the frame.... [We added them for you. They needed to be reduced in size a bit.] _________________ |

I may have found the answer... see photo below of a 28 model with an eight engine. Note the huge cut-back in the firewall for the eight to fit.
Oddly, I always thought the 26 and 28 were the same body (Buick/Olds). This would mean that they had a different firewall between the six and eight. Guess that is possible. _________________ PontiacRegistry.com... building the single largest source of Pontiac information, services, and entertainment in the world! |
