I drive my 69 GTO 2-3 times a month. Whenever the car sits for an extended period of time I get a leak where the timing cover meets the intake manifold. Is there a proper way to seal the foam gasket among these two components to stop the leak ? _________________ |

1st off the seal between the intake & timing chain cover is not foam it is a rubber type seal that is pressed in between the 2 parts. The best way to seal them is to put a little bit of silicone sealer on both sides of the seal & when you install it you don't tighten the intake down until you have the 2 parts on & then you use the bolt at the intake & timing chain to pull the intake to the timing chain cover so it squeezes the seal tight to the timing chain cover Then when it's tight against the cover you then tighten the intake bolts down . That will keep you from leaking IF you do it that way. _________________ I have a 73 GTO that I bought new, well it was a demo because the car I ordered was an SD car which never came in & i had to take what was left because I was in the Navy & had to talk to the dealer when I could. |

When I pulled the intake on my niece's '76 Trans Am because of a stick lifter (brand new one, BTW!), I forgot to pull the intake with the bolt through the water pump before tightening the intake bolts. I didn't feel like starting over- yes, it was one of those days!
Fortunately, I had pushed the intake tightly forward, and the liberal application of a gasket adhesive/sealant has kept everything high and dry. I got lucky on that one. I have found this gasket ADHESIVE is really more stout than just silicone- when it comes to removing it too, unfortunately. I would give it a try. _________________ PontiacRegistry.com... building the single largest source of Pontiac information, services, and entertainment in the world! |

I don't like using the black adhesive as it stays sticky to long & then draws the dirt & grease form all over the engine & then runs down all over everything & looks nasty. I perfere the silicone sealer as it sets up & stays soft the entire time. _________________ I have a 73 GTO that I bought new, well it was a demo because the car I ordered was an SD car which never came in & i had to take what was left because I was in the Navy & had to talk to the dealer when I could. |
