I just recently purchased a 1940 Pontiac coupe body to make a hot rod out of it. It had no engine and the front part of the frame was replaced with a camero sub frame for disc brakes and power steering. It had a out of state title and I wanted to get it changed to the state I live in. In doing this I realized I had no vin # where it should be since the front suspension and frame was replaced and it had no engine in it. I was told that GM/Pontiac had a hidden vin somewhere on the car so if got stolen they would have it some where. I saw today where ford had the vin number every two feet on the top on the frame on the driver"s side. Did GM/Pontiac do something like that? Any suggestions? _________________ |

I have just gone through something similar with my '40 Pontiac, sorting out the VIN. I actually had the titles from Wisconsin and then when moved to Florida, plus the original transfer paperwork from Kentucky when I bought it in 1978. My situation was that the title from Kentucky had been changed way before I bought the car to the engine number (obviously they couldn't find the actual VIN stamped in the frame), and their titles said they could use the engine number too. My problem was I sold the original engine and plan to put in a 400. So I wanted to make sure the car and title matched.
If you have enough frame left, the only place I know of Pontiac stamping the VIN was on the left top frame rail pretty much right under where the battery tray was located. I could see my stamped VIN, but as I mentioned, it didn't match the title, and since the engine was gone, my title didn't match the car now.
Luckily for me, because I already owned the car and it was all documented, they just told me to stamp or add a tag (which I did) the number shown on the title. I really didn't expect it to be that easy... especially coming from the DMV.
Obviously your situation is a bit more complicated. Because you are in Florida, check this web link that the DMV sent me: http://www3.flhsmv.gov/dmv/Proc/TL/TL-50.PDF
It contains the information you will probably need, and outlines the procedure to go through. My guess is that they will just want a letter of sale of the car to you and then assign you a new VIN to put on the car. If you have any questions, drop a note to: Tom Thayer at the Florida DMV [TomThayer@flhsmv.gov]
If you have any '40 Pontiac questions, just yell. _________________ PontiacRegistry.com... building the single largest source of Pontiac information, services, and entertainment in the world! |
