Is anyone else concerned with camshaft wear in older engines? The jury seems to be out as to whether or not modern conventional motor oils, with less zinc, can protect what we have. I have a 59 Bonneville and wonder if I should add a product like ZDDP. Any opinions would be appreciated.
Thanks! _________________ |

I'd say yes. ZDDP is needed. Either an additive or motor oil with it. Hemmings sells it and a case includes shipping. BTW - I think my 64 Cat is forgotten. It's not a Bonnie or GP and all the others are in the 'shadow' of 'The Great One'.

It's hard to think that something like no zinc would harm our little used cars. However, for the small cost of the additive, and the big cost of repair, why take a chance. I have added the STP that has the ZDDP, and for all the world, it just looks like the regular STP we used to always use.
You guys think your '59 and '64 are forgotten years... try driving a '40 Pontiac. At least mine is street rodded so it gets some attention.
Many years ago I grabbed some Catalinas down here in Florida- hadn't seen driving ones up in Wisconsin for many years... couldn't give them away! Everyone wanted GPs or Bonnies. Me, I like the sporty Cats! _________________ PontiacRegistry.com... building the single largest source of Pontiac information, services, and entertainment in the world! |
