I'm wondering if anyone can tell me about the gasket for the exhaust pipe to the exhaust manifold for a 1951 Chieftain 8 cyl. The one I keep getting is just a flat gasket about 1/16" thick. It never seems to keep the connection from leaking. Is there another style/type that goes there? Has anyone found a better gasket from another make, model, year? |

The main problem with any exhaust leak is that something isn't fitting together nice and flat. Then, once a gap starts, the hot exhaust just keeps eating away at it until you have a nice big leak. Also, make sure the exhaust pipe is well supported so it cannot wiggle at all. They will, no matter how tight you make the two manifold bolts if not held firmly.
If everything is nice and clean, flat, and meeting up properly, there should not be a problem. I never had leaks on my '40 or '54 Pontiacs.
If all seems to be in order, try a new gasket and coat both sides liberally with Permatex "Ultra Coper" sealant. That may do the trick. You might even try two gaskets sandwiched together for some extra "squish."
Let us know how you make out with this. Good luck. _________________ PontiacRegistry.com... building the single largest source of Pontiac information, services, and entertainment in the world! |

I saw your reply shortly after I posted. I was looking through the posts and re read this one. So, it turned out that the ss replacement exhaust pipe was not the correct diameter, too small. No problem I had a machinist manufacture a ring to increase the size of the pipe and it now fits perfectly. Also discovered an exhaust leak in the box located below the carb. Finally found a fellow in Fitchburg who did a great job and cleaned up all the surfaces on the exhaust manifold. Now, I have to be sure to listen closely to make sure I don't hit the start button again and grind the flywheel/starter gears because it is now a quiet engine. |
