Lovers of rare Firebirds, check out the article in the On-Line Magazine by Ray Snider of his very rare (and mysterious) '83 Firebird SE 2-Seat Roadster. It is very interesting, and very intriguing... who build them, where, how many....? Ray has found very little information on these cars and would love to know more (as would the rest of us). If you have some information, please share it with us.
Thanks. |

The standard engine for the S/E was a 2.8-liter HO V-6 rated at 135 HP. I hope the "HO" actually did some good, because the 2.8 I had in a Blazer was so poopy that on the highway, gusts of wind would kick you out of overdrive. You had to pump the pedal so much to keep going, they might as well have just had two pedals like a bicycle.
The "Firebird Illustartaed Buyers Guide" by John Gunnell states that "Optional powerplants on the 1983 S/E included the 2.5-liter EFI four-cylinder as a delete-option or the 5.0-liter four-barrel with a transmission choice of five-speed manual or automatic."
I am assuming that this is the same engine that was later referred to as the "Iron Duke". As for the "European Performance", that is just another way of saying "handles good, but as fast as a hurd of turtles."
Poor Pontiac in the '80s.... offered low-performance V-8s and high-performance 4-cylinders, all in the same car. Can you say "lost"? |
