The engine "YT" can mean a lot of things, including: 1969 400/330hp; 1972 400/250hp; 1974 400/225hp; 1975 400/185hp; 1976 400/185hp; and 1978 400/180hp.
I suspect the other engine numbers are the casting numbers. Look on the right bank just below the head in the front and see if there are more numbers there; those will tell the story best. Also check by the distributor hole and see if there are any two digits cast in there (last two of the production year).
I don't have any data on the transmission number. _________________ PontiacRegistry.com... building the single largest source of Pontiac information, services, and entertainment in the world! |

Your original post ask about "196437 YT" and this post is "196347 YT." The 1968 info may help.
However, I cannot find anything like this (either number combinations) anywhere.
The VIN will be stamped on the block where you mention, but this does not match any 1968 VIN number sequences. If this is the number below the VIN (production code), it doesn't match anything for 1968 either that I can find.
I have checked John Gunnell's "Standard Catalog of Pontiac" and Pete McCarthy's "Muscle Car Performance" book. _________________ PontiacRegistry.com... building the single largest source of Pontiac information, services, and entertainment in the world! |

I've checked again and still believe this is tghe production code. Ther YT identifying the engind and the numbers the production sequence.
Does the block have engine displacement size cast into the side of it between the front freeze plugs? late '69 and up did so on both sides.
Also to help zero in on age, two freeze plugs on each side are 1966 and earlier; three is 1967 and later.
What about the numbers on the other pad? Those should be the VIN for the car. That would be the real answer to what this is from. _________________ PontiacRegistry.com... building the single largest source of Pontiac information, services, and entertainment in the world! |

in 1969 a YT motor was standard for a Firebird 400. The numbers next to the YT stamp is the engine unit number. The engine serial number or VIN is on the driver side of the water pump. with VIN PHS can tell you what car it originally went into
behind the distributor you will find the block casting number (9790071 was typical for a 400) and the block date code |
