I am installing a 350 ci engine in a '64 Tempest Custom Conv. I have been told the only exhaust manifolds that will fit are 1964's. Is this correct? If not what manifolds can be used other than '64's for this application? |

I can't see why someone would say only '64 manifolds would fit. A number of years ago a friend put a later model 455 into his '64 Tempest, replacing the original 6-cylinder. Those manifolds fit just fine, with only haveing to go get pipes made at a shop to fit. But there was no interference problems with anything.
You do not mention what year your 350 is, or even if it is a Pontiac engine. So, we can't check to see what cars its manifolds can fit into.
However, assuming, of course that other Pontiac manifolds will fit your 350 engine, the following manifolds (according to Holland Interchange) will fit in the '64 Tempest:
RIGHT- '63-'64 Pontiac (except 421 HO), '63 Tempest 4-cylinder, '63-'64 Tempest V-8 (that would be the 326)
LEFT- '64 Tempest V-8 (326)
Hope this helps. |

re: installing a 350 ci engine in a '64 Tempest Custom Conv. Thanks for the reply indicating any yr. Pontiac exhaust manifolds could be used and would fit into the '64 without clearance issues. You indicated you may be able to provide additional info. if you knew the engine make and year. The engine is a Pontiac and it is from a '71. Thanks for the help. _________________ |

I didn't say "any" manifolds will fit. The list I made indicated the Pontiac manifolds that are indicated as interchangeable to the '64 Tempest (have to assume V-8, of course).
Checking on a '71 Pontiac 350 (assume full-size car because you did not indicate differently) we find that the left manifold from a '71-'74 350 fits the '64-'66 Tempest. But the right does not.
This gets very corn-fusing! I am going to made a guess here, that since the 350 interchanges to '64-'66, the ports and bolts are a match to a 389 or 326... at least for the left side. Since heads were the same for both sides, the right manifolds should interchange - WITH THE ENGINE- too.
That being said, the lask of finding interchange information for the right side might be something very simple like differences in exhaust pipes. That you can handle with a shop custom fitting new pipes. I doubt it is anything like starter clearance or steering... but....
I do not think you are in any dangerous area here, as people have been swapping Pontiac V-8s in and out of '64 Tempests forever.
My bet is that the manifolds on your 350 already will just require custom pipes to be made. A little eyeball comparing should get you some good information. A major clearance/space conflict should be easily apparent.
Let us know how you progress. |
