Can anyone advise where to get a fuel tank sending unit for my 52 chieftain. I am looking for one that is made in the US.
I called then and now automotive and they wanted 125.00-165.00 to rebuild mine but, mine is beyond repair. _________________ |

I am assuming you are referring to the entire float unit/assembly in the gas tank, right?
Have you checked with Kurt Kelsey and CPR (California Pontiac Restoration)? Both listed in our Members Discount area.
How about used or junk yard item? I'll bet it is the same from at least '49 to '52, and perhaps even from other GM cars. I'll check Hollander Interchange and get back in a bit. |

I just checked the Hollander interchange manual and it does not break down the fuel tank into crelated components. However, it does in fact show the 1949 through 1952 as interchangable, except station wagon and sedan delivery. There are no other GM cars listed, so Pontiac must have been unique.
Without being 100% sure, I would still guess that since '49-'52 are the same tank (size-wise), and they were all 6-volt still, this would be a pretty good indication that they used the same sending unit too.
Just a thought. I know you want US made, but I wouldn't worry about originality as nobody will ever see it anyway. Therefore, have you checked with some place like NAPA that has books full of aftermarket producers who make lots of things like sending units, valves, etc.? |

John, Mike in Auburn Mass is no longer there. That was the JF Sullivan Co. BTW, it's Worcester!!!
Look in Hemmings under services offered. There is a guy in CA named Jack Marcheski who will do it for about $75.00. It will be done and back in priority mail the next day. He has done a few for me with no issues. |

Well, I called the phone number immediately before I posted that message, and got the answer machine for Atwater-Kent. That is the name of the company he was using at that time. |

John,
There were 2 partners, Rich and Mike. One of the partners got sick and has supposedly passed away. I was told by someone who is close to them that they are not in business anymore. I do not see their ad in Hemmings anymore. |

I just talked to Micheal Dowling of Atwater-Kent Manufacturing. He says that they are still doing sending units. A newly manufactured for 49-52 Pontiac is $150, rebuilds are $115. The phone number is still 508-942-9500. |

John,
You got the # wrong on the last post. You had it right in a previous post.
