I have a 1954 Pontiac Chieftain Eight project car that is missing the gas tank. In my search for a replacement, I found many variations for 1954 Chevrolets. I have heard the tank was common to Pontiac but have never been able to confirm it "officially". The tank was missing when I bought it, so I have no way to compare dimensions or filler location. Does anyone know for sure that the Chevy tank is the same (or will work)?

According to the Hollander Interchange Manual, the only gas tank interchangable with a '54 Pontiac Chieftain is the 1953 and 1954 Pontiac units. We are assuming you do not have a station wagon.
A double check of Chevrolet shows the same; only interchangable between its '53 and '54 models.
Don't dispair. Those cars are so common-- still today-- in parts and salvage yards that you should have no real problem locating one. It will just take some detective work, and hopefully you will find one nearby to avoid awkard (and $$) shipping. _________________ PontiacRegistry.com... building the single largest source of Pontiac information, services, and entertainment in the world! |

Jason,
Where are you located at? If you are near Missouri, I know where a few old Pontiacs like this are.
Thanks,
Jeff |

I am in Tucson, AZ. I had been hoping for a new tank but I can likely find a salvaged one near here - they have a few at www.dvap.com
Thanks |

Check with one of our commercial suppliers who pass on a nice discount to our members, California Pontiac Restoration. Rich had a NOS tank for my '40 a number of years ago. Click on their ad to your right. _________________ PontiacRegistry.com... building the single largest source of Pontiac information, services, and entertainment in the world! |

Steve, owner of the Pontiac Heaven Salvage Yard and event organizer for the "Pontiac Heaven Drags" is from Arizona. I bet he will also have what you need. |
