|
|
Help anyone, It seemes that my 68 GTO has a bag of mixed parts and quite frankly, I would just love to decode all the parts just to see where I stand at and to determine what I would like to do to or with the engine ! Let me start by saying that I recently purchesed the GTO and includes the number 42 in the vin ( so far so good) , all body parts and interior seem to be original also . As an added bonus, it still has the original Muncie M-20 four speed in it ( ye ha ) ! Well, that is where it apparently stops , because the engine combo is a different animal ! Here we go, I'll start from the top down , the Quadrajet has a number stamped of 7042240 MB ( believe it is around a 1972 , but not sure if it is a Pontiac version ), the intake manifold has the number 9799068 cast into it ( believe it is a 1970 standard of Ram air possibly ) the cylinder head hasa number of L109 on passenger side and L099 on the drivers side ( still looking for a prefix code like 6x, 62, ect..) the engine cast date code on rear of engine is xx481988 ( have seen conflicting info on this number.. could be 71,72,73 or 75 year or even later ) the code by the distributer is K_ _ 7( sorry do not have thet one with me but do remember that it starts with k and ends with a 7 ) and now the number on the front of the block is 29L133218 and has the letters PWH stamped over them ( believe this may be a 1975-79 engine . Also there are a few more numbers close to these numbers a few inches away to the left also stamped that are LMR 42598 The only number I see on the exhaust manifold ( left one ) is C016 or the last number may be a 5 ( sort of hard to tell ) . What statred me wondering about all of this was that the choke is completely missing ( I believe it was a divorce style that mounted on the intake manifold , do not know for sure) and was looking for a choke assembly to open and close the choke . Also very interesting is the oil filter, it was leaking when I got it ( around the top of the filter ) and I purchased a new one ( thinking it was a 1968 400 CI) and it still leaks ! Maybe it as a different oil filter that goes to this engine ( whenevr I dertermine what this engine really is ) , the filter housing appers to be flat and perpendicular to the ground and not a slant style . Wow this is a lot of info....PLEASE CAN ANYONE HELP SAVE MY SANITY AND FIGURE OUT WHAT ALL OF THIS REALLY IS ? I appreciate any help from anyone....Thanks !!!!!!!! Randy. _________________ |

Thanks for the info on my engine . I did see a number cast into the head , in the center two ports on the out side of a 1 and 3, any idea what year they may be ? Also there is a code by the distributor of K117 , is the block still a 1979 ? One last issue, I have a 12 bolt ( cover ) on the differential in my 68 GTO, where is a good area to find numbers to define what this is ? My original build sheet says that my car came with 3:55 gears with a limited slip, but the 12 bolt ? Thanks again for all the help, Randy. _________________ |

The 13 head is a 1970 head. High Compression.
Good head for performance. Cast dates are for 1969.
The Pontiac 400 engine was stockpiled for use in 1979.
It was cast in late 1977, for use in the Special Edition TA's mostly.
No 12 bolt in your car originally. Probably a Chevelle rear. _________________ http://www.wallaceracing.com/
