I have a 1940 Pontiac Arrow with the original engine which is a 224. What automatic transmission can I swap out the original with?

The 1940 Pontiac was sort of a mish-mash of engines. The Arrow and Arrow Deluxe were carry-overs from 1939 (and earlier) using the Chevrolet 224 cid six cylinder engine. Only the 1940 Special Six (an American model which superseded the earlier Chieftain) used the Pontiac flathead six.

That being said, it would be best to investigate as many Chevy sources as you can to see what was interchangeable with the early Chevy sixes. We see questions about interchangeable early Chevy engines in Old Cars Weekly very often, so suspect there a lot of information available about both the engines and the transmissions.

There is a company called Speed Gems (we think formally Bendtsen’s Transmission Adapters) that may have what you need for an adapter if necessary. Check them at: http://www.transmissionadapters.com/
