Good question...
I have a 1969 Owners Manual and discovered something I never noticed before. While it doesn't show the GTO speedometer, it does show the Tempest one, which only goes up to 120mph.
However, it shows the Grand Prix speedometer which goes to 140mph and the Firebird speedometer which goes to 160mph- wishful thinking, huh? (though lots of Trans Ams had this 160mph unit for a number of years). The 1968 Owners Manual only shows the Firebird up to 120mph.
So, judging from this info, it seems reasonable that the GTO could have had a 140mph speedometer.... but (and here's the Big Butt!) a Google search shows 1969 GTO speedometers as 120s and 140s...?
Just a thought, was it possible that there was a mid-year shift (up or down), different plants using different speedometers, or simply parts being run out of at a plant and Grand Prix speedos being inserted?
I find nothing anywhere in literature that shows the GTO 140mph speedometer as either standard, or accessory.
I would give a yell to: http://www.tachman.com/gmpolds.htm and see what they may know. _________________ PontiacRegistry.com... building the single largest source of Pontiac information, services, and entertainment in the world! |

You might also want to drop a note to Paul Bourbeau in Mass. at hisandhers67gto@aol.com. He does a lot of GTO restoration. _________________ PontiacRegistry.com... building the single largest source of Pontiac information, services, and entertainment in the world! |
